Mastering Masculine Body Language: A Quick Primer


When it comes to being better at being a man, there are a surprising number of stupidly simple "hacks" that immediately cause people to perceive you as a higher-value man. None of these hacks are as easy as tweaking your body language and posture. The way you carry yourself matters. 

A lot. 

This is such an important concept, Shelly and I teach it to all three of our children. Practice these as often as possible. In most cases, they become habits in a matter of days.

  • Always stay relaxed.
  • Breathe deeply and slowly.
  • Don't fidget or make sudden movements. All movements should be smooth and relaxed.
  • Never cover your throat, chest, or groin area with hands or objects. This implied defensiveness.
  • Keep your back straight, shoulders back, and your head up. Never slouch or hunch over.
  • Take up space.
  • When someone wants or something catches your attention, turn slowly to address them/it. Never give "side glances."
  • When making eye contact, look from one eye to the other, then down to the person's mouth, then back up to the first eye. Stay on each point for a second or two. 
  • When making eye contact, do not be the first to break it and look away.
  • Make yourself appear big (psychologically, this causes you to open up your arms and legs, which is perceived as confidence.)
  • Don't put your hands in your pockets. If you do, keep your thumbs out.
  • If holding something (like a drink), do not hold it in front of your chest.
  • Smile only when a genuine moment arises. Fake, forced smiles are easy to spot and denote fear or anxiety. 
  • When entering a room, make eye contact with every person. 
  • When choosing a place to sit, keep your back to a wall.
So... why bother with this silly masculine body language thing? I'll let the experts explain:
